The State Ballet of Georgia has made a grand entry into London’s ballet scene with its exquisite production of Swan Lake, currently gracing the stage of the London Coliseum until 8 September. This extension of their first-ever visit to London is  testament to the company’s captivating artistry and the enthusiasm of the audience, who are eager to witness a ballet that melds tradition with fresh, vibrant energy.

A vision of passion and precision

Under the masterful direction of Nina Ananiashvili, a world-renowned former prima ballerina with both the Bolshoi Ballet and the American Ballet Theatre, the company has flourished, and their performance in London is no exception. Ananiashvili’s return to her homeland in 2004 marked the beginning of a new era for the State Ballet of Georgia, infusing the company with her own blend of passion, precision, and artistic innovation. This production of Swan Lake stands as a pinnacle of her vision, merging classical purity with contemporary sensibilities.

The ballet itself is a feast for the eyes and ears, combining Tchaikovsky’s timeless score with the intricate choreography that has made Swan Lake the most beloved ballet in the world. Staged for the company by Ananiashvili’s long-term dance partner, Alexei Fadeechev, this rendition is breathtaking. It features hand-painted backdrops created by the talented artisans at the Georgian Opera House’s workshops, along with nearly 100 costumes designed by theatrical legend Vyacheslav Okunev. The craftsmanship of these elements is remarkable, elevating the visual splendour of the production. The white tutus shimmer with an almost ethereal quality, and the lakeside and ballroom settings draw the audience deep into the fantasy world of this iconic ballet.

Flamenco adds a unique twist

Moreover, this production introduces a unique twist that sets it apart – the incorporation of flamenco elements. The addition of four dancers executing flamenco moves adds a surprising and invigorating dynamic to the performance, blending two distinct dance styles into a seamless, harmonious whole. This innovative choice pays homage to the versatility of the dancers and their ability to cross stylistic boundaries, enhancing the narrative’s emotional depth.

Technically, the performance was near flawless. Each movement exuded a combination of grace and athleticism, demonstrating the dancers’ impeccable training and dedication. The dancers of the State Ballet of Georgia, praised for their versatility and accomplishment, lived up to their reputation, delivering a performance that was both technically perfect and emotionally charged. The ballet’s dramatic moments were performed with such passion and elegance that they drew spontaneous applause from the audience.

Costumes add to the artistry

The exquisite costumes, with their ornate detailing, further enhanced the experience, complementing the dancers’ movements and the overall aesthetic of the production. Each costume seemed to tell its own story, adding layers to the already complex narrative of Swan Lake This attention to detail, from the costumes to the sets, reflects the company’s commitment to excellence and its respect for ballet’s rich traditions.

Accompanied by the award-winning English National Opera Orchestra, the music was performed with a stirring intensity that matched the dancers’ fervour on stage. The combination of live orchestration and the dancers’ artistry created a truly immersive experience for the audience, one that transported them into the tragic and beautiful world of Odette and Odile.

As the State Ballet of Georgia takes its final bow at the London Coliseum, it leaves behind an indelible impression on the London dance scene. The company’s ability to balance the grandeur of classical ballet with innovative elements like flamenco speaks to its bold artistic vision and commitment to pushing the boundaries of traditional ballet. For those fortunate enough to witness this remarkable production, it is a testament to the enduring power of Swan Lake and the boundless potential of the State Ballet of Georgia.

After its London run, the company will continue to share this extraordinary production with audiences in Dublin from November 20 to 24, offering another chance to experience the passion, precision, and elegance that define the State Ballet of Georgia’s artistry. This is a ballet company that truly embodies the spirit of dance, bringing new life to a classic tale with every performance.
