The Commitment – How a Derby based initiative aims to tackle climate change and biodiversity loss

The Commitment is a rapidly growing organisation dedicated to putting climate change and biodiversity higher up the political agenda.

‘There’s one thing we can all agree on, the importance of a healthy planet’ – The Commitment

The Commitment is a rapidly growing organisation dedicated to putting climate change and biodiversity higher up the political agenda.

Our concept is described as a happy middle ground between petitions and protests, and uses the individual voices of the voting public to show how much they care. The method involves asking people to make a Commitment, stating that they will put the health of the planet at the heart of their decision when they vote.

The Commitments are then taken to politicians to show them that they have a powerful mandate to act. Politically neutral and non partisan, we will talk to any politician who will listen. We are not asking people to change their vote. We provide a platform for people to tell politicians how they feel about the issues of climate change and biodiversity loss.

The Commitment is currently working in Derby and the West Midlands to coincide with the upcoming local elections on 6 May 2021. In Derby, the focus is on 4 wards – Chaddesden, Boulton Moor, Mackworth and Derwent, each one seeing a narrow margin of success in previous election results. The reach stretches beyond the boundaries of these 4 wards however, and we are approaching all those who are based throughout the city area, as all Commitments from both Derby and West Midlands citizens are important.

We are currently reaching out to individuals, groups and organisations to gather as much support as possible and have already gathered some amazing support from many well-known environmental organisations. With the May elections just around the corner, there is no better time to make your Commitment to put the health of the planet at the heart of your vote.
