Yesterday saw one of the worst breaches of security in the history of the United States of America (US).
A mob of supporters of the out-going US president, Donald Trump, stormed Capitol Hill. Within the US parliament building itself, the results of last November’s election were being certified. It was the mob’s intention to disrupt this process and prevent Joe Biden being officially installed as president and they were acting under the direction of Trump himself. Armed with guns, chemicals and pipe bombs, the mob smashed the windows of the Capitol building and got inside the Senate. As a result of their violence, four people have died.
Order has now been restored, the certification process has been completed and Biden has been confirmed as president. Trump’s social media accounts have been suspended and there are calls from Democrats to use the 25th Amendment to remove him from office for the final two weeks of his term. The mayor of Washington DC, Muriel Bowser, has extended the state of public emergency for two weeks until the day after Biden’s inauguration.
Meanwhile, six hundred miles away in the state of Georgia, Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff won the Senate runoff election, handing Democrats control of the Senate for the first time since 2015. In Raphael Warnock, Georgia has its first ever black senator.
