Part of the main

A reflection on John Donne’s Meditation No 17

No man is an island,
Entire of itself,
Every man is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less

As Big Ben chimes the new year in
The Ode to Joy’s still ours to sing!

We’re part of Europe by natural law,
No edict can shift shore further from shore.

Stay proud of our role in the Project for Peace
In the fight for useless divisions to cease.

The lamps across Europe have lit again,
We’re more than an island, we’re part of the main.

We won’t say goodbye but ‘Auf Wiedersehen’,
Or a kind ‘au revoir’ – we’ll meet again!
