Following lobbying by campaigners including legal group Client Earth and their supporters, the deadline to comment on proposed government policies regarding air pollution has been extended.
The government is proposing to extend air pollution targets to 2040, which the organisation says will affect many more people: 18 years is a long time to solve a problem that has seen the UK regularly falling foul of EU air pollution limits.
In the West Midlands alone, the University of Birmingham reports that some 2.8 million people are affected by air pollution that shortens their life expectancy, and some 34,000 people die early across the UK.
Client Earth is asking people to comment by the government deadline of June 27 2022 and to urge government to bring forward the air pollution reduction targets.
There are also consultations on water, waste and nature.
You can access the consultation through Client Earth here.
