Dear Birmingham City Council,
We welcome the creation of a team within the council to work on carbon reduction. There should be plenty of benefits from cutting the waste of energy and resources in the Council’s operations. The technologies to do this already exist.
The pace of change remains frighteningly slow, and the wealth of exciting ideas and interesting pilot projects cannot compensate for the low level of implementation of sizable projects having the required impact.
We want to see greater ambition regarding insulating homes, for council tenants and others. Birmingham Friends of the Earth are actively campaigning for more resources for this urgent work.
There could be a lot more solar generation on roofs of schools and other public buildings.
The Council needs to have a plan to replace the mass burning of household waste by recycling it. We have presented a petition calling for a recycling plan to be produced and implemented.
Route to Zero should transform the way the council operates, learning from best practice in other cities. Everyone needs to be involved and contribute to the changes required.
Libby Harris,
Birmingham Friends of the Earth
